MYTHOS

Eurydice was a woodland nymph who came to fall in love with Orpheus, the son of the god Apollo and the muse Calliope. Orpheus was gifted a lyre by his father and was known to play music that was said to be even more beautiful that the songs of the Sirens. Still reeling from excitement and euphoria on her wedding day, Eurydice didn't notice a viper at her feet while she danced with the water nymphs. The viper bit Eurydice and killed her, leaving Orpheus devastated. Orpheus would mourn the death of Eurydice greatly, and the songs he composed and performed were so sad that even gods were said to have wept.

Orpheus set out to descend to Hades to convince him to let his wife leave the underworld and be given back her life. Any other mortal would have died, but Orpheus, being protected by the gods, went to Hades and persuaded him to be able to take Eurydice back with him. Hades agreed under one condition: Eurydice would have to follow behind Orpheus while walking out from the caves of the underworld, and he could not turn to look at her as they walked. Orpheus went around in the Underworld searching for Eurydice, when he heard her, he closed his eyes and reached out for her hand. Thus Eurydice began her ascent from the underworld; something that few souls ever did.

Unable to hear Eurydice's footsteps, Orpheus began to fear that Hades had fooled him. Only a few feet away from the exit, Orpheus turned to see Eurydice behind him, sending her back to be trapped in the underworld forever. Orpheus tried to return to the underworld but was unable to as a person cannot enter the realm of Hades twice while alive. Orpheus played a mourning song with his lyre, calling for death so that he could be united with Eurydice for eternity.
