Sustainable and Ethical Ingredients

We are committed to only using materials that are cultivated or produced in a sustainable way, protecting biodiversity and ecosystems and reducing our environmental impact, while safeguarding human rights and people’s livelihoods.

Our Cruelty-Free Commitment

None of the ingredients we use to make our products have been tested on animals at any stage in their development.

Safe, Non-Toxic Ingredients

Our products do not contain genetically modified (GMOs) ingredients, parabens, sulfates, or petrochemicals. The natural ingredients that we use in our products are harvested and refined through processes that retain the integrity of the original materials.

Vegan

We are committed to providing ethically-sourced ingredients, which to us means that none of the ingredients that we use contain any animal parts, by-products, or derivatives.

Our Stance on Palm Oil

Our products do not contain palm oil or any of its derivatives.

What is so special about palm oil?

Palm oil is the most popular vegetable oil produced and consumed in the world. It accounts for around 34% of the global vegetable oil volume, with soybean trailing behind at 29%. It’s been used in just about every product that you can think of, from shampoo to lipstick to biofuel to peanut butter and everything in-between. Palm oil is so widely used because it is the most efficient oilseed crop in the world. A hectare of a palm oil plantation can produce almost ten times the amount of oil than the next closest type of oilseed.

So, why not use palm oil?

The high profit margins that come with palm oil production have fueled the relentless drive for short term gains and growth, which in turn has lead to the large-scale deforestation of our planet's rainforestsglobal warminghuman rights violationsland grabsillegal wildlife poaching and trading, and new species being classified as threatened or endangered

By choosing not us palm oil or palm oil derivatives in our products, we are decreasing the demand for palm oil. Until such a time that the palm oil industry can make significant strides to ensure ethical sourcing, we will continue using natural ingredients that we can verify have been sustainably sourced.

Sustainable and Ethical Practices

Not only is it imperative for our products to be made of ethically and sustainably-sourced ingredients, but it is also our philosophy that individuals and the environment should only be improved by our products and practices.

Ethical Sourcing

We are committed to only using ingredients that are sustainably manufactured or harvested, meaning that we do not use resources at a faster rate than they can be replenished.

Formulating safe products that are better for the planet while protecting human rights ensures that we put people’s health at the forefront of our business model.

BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) have been disproportionally affected by human rights abuses and climate change impacts at the hands of unjust and unethical supply chains. By committing to responsibly source our raw ingredients, we are working to disrupt systems built on inequality and injustice.

Thoughtful Packaging

From our labels, to our containers, to our mailer boxes and tape, all of our packaging is either curbside recyclable or biodegradable.

Orpheus and Lyre is committed to remaining plastic negative. This means that for the few products of ours that utilize plastic containers, we calculate the plastic footprint of each product and provide funding to plastic recovery and recycling initiatives equal to twice as much plastic as that product's unique footprint.

This funding creates and improves rural plastic infrastructure used for plastic collection, sorting, and recycling as well as the recovery and recycling of low-value plastic waste from nature, landfills, incineration plants, and our planet's oceans.

Impactful Giving

In addition to our commitment to fund initiatives to negate our carbon and plastic footprints, we have pledged to donate 1% of our annual revenue to registered 501(c)(3) charitable organizations and B Corps that are steadfast in their commitments to protect the environment as well as human rights through sustainable global supply chains.

If you have a charitable organization or initiative in need of funding and think that they stack up to our values, please contact us to let us know more.

Resource and waste management

All of our products are handmade in micro batches, which helps us to ensure that as little material waste as possible occurs.

All of the paper, plastic, and glass that houses the ingredients we use in our products is recycled.

Our products are all made and housed in a facility that is powered in large part by solar energy.

Current initiatives

Our current initiatives include reforestation efforts in partnership with thegoodapi and Eden Reforestation Projects to plant a tree with the purchase of every Orpheus and Lyre product.

We've also made a commitment to climate action with The Climate Collaborative with specific focuses on energy efficiency, forest conservation efforts, reducing the climate impact of consumer packaging, climate policy, renewable energy, and reducing the climate impacts of transportation.

We are committed to remaining plastic negative, and have funded projects through rePurpose to recover twice as much as our estimated plastic footprint is expected to be within our first fiscal year in operation.
